Curation and Conservation of Columbia University Fossil Invertebrate Collection at the AMNH, Summer 2024 (A Pilot Project) Colu mbia Unive rsity Collection - Curation and Conservation - 2024 Week 3 This week we thought we would show you a step-by-step of how we have been taught to clean the specimens! First, we use a variety of tools (soot sponges, softer sponges, paint brushes, a vacuum) to brush away any dust and grime that has accumulated over the years the specimens have been stored. We do the same to the specimen labels, in addition to wrapping them in protective sleeves to ensure their longevity. Next, we cut out orange specimen numbers and matching QR codes and apply archival adhesive to attach the orange specimen numbers to each fossil. The two pictures at the very end of this series show the before and after of the specimen label cleaning process! After we clean, rehouse, and label the specimens, we photograph and add the specimens to the KE EMu database. It is...

(From left to right: Elizabeth, Corra, Makena, Mac) We started off our week being trained on how to catalog using KE EMu (which stands for electronic museums). Photos of all of the specimens we cleaned, rehoused, and photographed last week were uploaded to KE EMu. Our job is to enter all the information on the specimen labels into the database so later the fossils can be searched for or accessed online by researchers to study and or examine. Our tour this week was of the mineral collection in the Earth and Planetary Sciences department. Jamie Newman, Senior Museum Specialist, kindly showed us beautiful specimens of minerals like Beryl and Azurite. We also learned about the Dana's Mineral Classification system. One unique...

Curation and Conservation of Columbia University Fossil Invertebrate Collection at the AMNH, Summer 2024 (A Pilot Project)   Colu mbia Unive rsity Collection - Curation and Conservation - 2024 Week 1 Hi, my name is Makena Hatch! I am a third-year student at Colorado College studying Geology and concentrating my studies in Organismal Biology and Ecology. In doing so, I am hoping to gain an understanding not only of deep time, but also of ecological and human time. My interests lie at the intersection of marine science and geoscience, making the opportunity to conserve and curate fossil marine invertebrates for AMNH a perfect fit for me! (Pictures are of my love for rocks through the years...) Hi! I'm Corra Lewis. I'm a rising sophomore at Colorado College majoring in geology. When I was little, I spent so much time wandering around museums and reading every plaque until my mom would have to drag me out. I am so excited to get the opportunity to work at the American ...
